Acyclovir for shingles

Is acyclovir effective for shingles?

Shingles is often treated with acyclovir. Other related drugs that may be used include famciclovir or valacyclovir (valtrex). These medications are effective when given within the first 24-48 hours after the onset of symptoms. If the diagnosis has been delayed for more than 48 hours, there is little point in buying these expensive medications. If you are older than 50, perhaps you may want to think about the shingles vaccine. Unfortunately, it only has a 75% efficacy.
