Mucus in stools

I am a 27-year-old female and recently I have noticed a lot of mucus in my stools. I have had alternating constipation and diarrhea for a few years. Is this of great concern? My health is otherwise okay.
Some people do have mucus in stools, especially patient who develop IBS. Mucus in stools can also be seen in patients with ulcerative colitis. I suggest you go and see your doctor and get a proper work up. The two disorders that you want ruled out are IBS and ulcerative colitis. Perhaps a referral to a gastroenterologist may be beneficial. Do remember, that the majority of people who have mucus in stools have normal health- so I would not go crazy about it.
